Topic Clusters
Topic Clusters build topical authority the way Google rewards it: instead of scattered one-off posts, you publish one broad pillar page on a core subject surrounded by many focused cluster articles on its sub-topics, all interlinked. Depth and focus on a topic are how smaller sites out-rank bigger ones in a niche.
Why it matters
Search engines measure how concentrated and comprehensive your content is around a subject. A tight, well-connected cluster signals expertise, and the internal links pass authority to the pillar and distribute it across the silo, so the whole group ranks higher and captures the long tail of related searches. A pile of unrelated articles does the opposite: it dilutes focus.
The model
- Pillar page— a broad, authoritative guide targeting the head keyword (e.g. “Email marketing”).
- Cluster articles— focused pieces on sub-topics (e.g. “welcome email sequence”, “email subject lines”, “email A/B testing”).
- Internal links — every cluster links up to the pillar, the pillar links down to each cluster, and siblings interlink where relevant.
How to use it
- Open Topic Clusters in the sidebar (under Content Planner), or go to
/pillars. - In Build a topic cluster, enter a core topic and pick a size (5–20 articles).
- Vireloop designs a pillar plus that many distinct cluster subtopics, stores the keywords, and schedules them into your Content Planner — the pillar first, then the clusters on the following open days.
- Articles then generate on schedule (or via the Content Planner / autopilot) like any other article.
What happens automatically
- Because the pillar is scheduled first, it publishes before its clusters. When each cluster article is generated, the SEO pass adds the internal links — clusters link up to the pillar, the pillar links down to clusters, and siblings interlink. No manual linking.
- On the Content Planner calendar, cluster slots show a badge: a solid Pillar: {topic} on the pillar slot and a muted Cluster: {topic} on the rest, so the structure is visible at a glance.
- Each pillar card on
/pillarstracks progress: keyword, description, a published-vs-total bar, and whether the pillar page is live yet.
Tips
- Build depth before breadth. Finish one cluster before starting an unrelated topic — scattered topics dilute focus.
- Pick topics you can credibly cover and that a first-time visitor would still recognize as core to your site.
- Topical authority compounds over months, not days. Expect coverage first, then improvements, then compounding gains.
- Deleting a pillar only removes the grouping — its scheduled articles and keywords stay.
